MGL u18s Stamullen 2 Leixlip 5
The conditions were dreadful out in Stamullen for long spells with heavy wind and rain. But, we found our rhythm and were 3-0 up within half an hour. Goals from Katie Allen, Emily Lynch and a 40 yard speculative effort from Fiona Shields - nice for our centre half to get her first goal! Maia Mulligan added a 4th with a really well struck free kick from the right and we had our 5th before half time when Emily ran on to a long ball from Sophie O'Connor to score her second.
Early in the second half we conceded 2 goals, but steadied the ship after that and could have added more in the last half an hour. A well deserved win for the girls.
U16A Balrath 3 Leixlip 0
A battling performance from the girls against a strong team who’ll finish at least 3rd. They took 2 goals well in the first half while we went toe to toe throughout. Our work rate was excellent and we played good football but couldn’t get the ball in the net.
We were better still in the second half and their 3rd was one of those where the ref said it crossed the line… from the centre circle. Both teams played on but he gave it.
Disappointed in the score line but satisfied with the effort - we’ll do well against others with performances like that.
U16 B/B1 cup quarter final Leixlip 2-1 Bluebell
Lads battled really hard for the win today. We took advantage of the wind in the first half to go 2 nil up through two clinical free kicks from Marti Jubert and James Gaynor. Bluebell pulled one back shortly before half time but the lads kept calm and closed out the game with a great defensive effort. Really good squad performance today from the 15 lads.
Sfai cup quarter final Pike 1-0 Leixlip
Very disappointed to exit the cup today.
We lost the toss and played with wind which was a blow. The game always takes 20 minutes to settle so couldn’t really make it count - we had all the ball but lacked any real quality. With five left in the half we got caught in a counter attack and their forward finished brilliantly.
Second half, although against the breeze we dominated and finally started playing, however we missed 5 one v ones and ultimately that was our failing. The team showed great fight, An opportunity missed but still a great run.
U14P Leixlip 1- 2 St Kevin’s
Not a day for the purest with gale force winds whipping all over the place at one point it was hard to know which way it was blowing. Anyway we started positively and by that I mean we didn’t concede inside 15mins but that was thanks to one wonderful full stretch save from our keeper Euan. We were also creating chances and a great move put Oisin Stokes through 1v1 but as he shifted the ball to his right it gave the keeper time to advance and block his shot but we were well in the game. After 20 mins we lost a little concentration and they put a good move and cross in from the right for their midfielder to finish unmarked in 6 yard box. Heads never went down and second half we had much the better of it and with 20 mins to go we got a deserved equalizer after a 30 yard free kick from Michael Cavanagh crashed off the bar Daniel Bradley reacted quickest and when his strike was blocked the ball rebounded to Jaden Lee who drilled home a left foot shot from 12 yards out.
After this we had them rattled and two superb in swinging corners from Rian Conway nearly led to a goal one the defender sliced over the bar when it was easier to slice in and the second we just missed getting a head on. Unfortunately with about 10 mins to go as we pushed they broke down the right and crossed for a headed goal that turned out to be the winner. We pushed to get the equalizer but the ball would not bounce for us. Lads were excellent again as Kevin’s are at the top of the league and in the semi of Sfai next weekend. On we go to Joey's on Monday, no easy games but if lads keep putting in performances more results will come.
